The funeral that came too early
Was one we all had
In the silence of our bedrooms
At night
Staring at the stars
Glowing warm on our ceilings
And clutching our dear animals close
I’m different,
We said
So the next morning
We took our stars down
And sealed them in a jar
We retired our animals
To the closet
In the same way
We buried the fish from the pet store
In our backyards
When they died
At night now
You listen closely
While you look up alone
Into the staggering blackness
You can almost hear the organs weeping
So sad they went so young
You hear the angels whisper
